Our Communities Deserve Better Transportation Choices
The ReThink Route 17 Alliance represents workers, families, and individuals in the Catskill region who seek improved and increased transportation choices. We stand for affordable, accessible, reliable and environmentally sustainable transportation choices for our communities. By providing a range of options that enable all residents and visitors to get to work, school and our main streets safely and affordably, we can improve our quality of life and economic opportunity by reducing car dependence and pollution.
Unfortunately, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is proposing to take our region in the opposite direction and increase traffic congestion, making the air we breathe dirtier and wasting taxpayer dollars. NYSDOT is pushing to spend $1.4 billion dollars adding an unnecessary lane to Route 17 between Harriman and Wurtsboro.
Prevailing science demonstrates that widening highways induces demand, creating more traffic over time.
60% of Hudson Valley roadways are currently in poor condition. We need to fix the infrastructure we have, not add more.
More cars on the road will mean more air pollution directly in NYS identified disadvantaged communities.
Investing in multi-modal transportation can help connect our communities and provide more options to get around without needing a car.
Investments in the region rather than the highway ensure visitors come and stay, not just pass through.
The NYS Climate Act mandates greenhouse gas emissions reductions for NYS by 2050. Preventing emissions from induced demand and providing driving alternatives will help meet these mandates.
